Sting Bio

Sting, whose real name is Gordon Matthew Sumner, was born in 1951 in Wallsend North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England a town heavily involved in the shipping industry. He always knew he wanted to be a singer. Sting got his start playing cruise ships, backing cabaret singers. Sting is most famously known for his time with the trio The Police in the eighties. The Police had many chart-topping hits including ‘Roxanne’ and ‘Every Breath you Take’. He broke away from the police in 1984 and went solo creating albums and working on film projects. Sting’s first solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles was released in 1985 and featured young Jazz musicians Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Omar Hakim and Darryl Jones. The album was unique because it showcased Sting’s writing abilities and also focused on political and social issues. Sting played Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now charity tour alongside Bruce Springsteen and Peter Gabriel. In 1993 Sting wrote the theme song for Lethal Weapon 3 with Eric Clapton and Michael Camen. He also made tracks for movies Leaving Las Vegas, Sabrina, Mercury Falling,  White Squall, The Mighty and The Thomas Crown Affair.
