Igor Levit, a pianist of German descent, was born in Gorky, Soviet Russia, on March 10, 1987. He earned the best academics in the history of the Hannover Academy of Music, Theatre, and Media when he finished his piano studies in 2009. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung named him one of the finest pianists of the 20th century even before he graduated. Levit was a BBC New Generation Artist and he received the Luitpold Prize for Young Artists at the Kissinger Sommer Festival in Germany. As a result, performances were made with groups including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Düsseldorf Symphony. In addition to playing chamber music alongside musicians including cellist Mischa Maisky, violinist Sergei Krylov, and violist Kim Kashkashian, Levit has performed solo recitals across Europe, the United States, and Israel. Since his debut in 2013 with an album of Beethoven's hefty last three piano sonatas, Levit has only recorded for the Sony Classical label. He has since released recordings of works by Beethoven, Bach, and Frederic Rzewski.
