MS Lauryn Hill Bio

Singer/songwriter, producer, and actress Lauryn Hill was born on May 26, 1975, in East Orange, New Jersey. She grew up in a musically-inclined family, which no doubt set the stage for her future career. In the 1990s, Lauryn Hill and her friends Prakazrel “Pras” Michel and his cousin, Wyclef Jean formed the group the Fugees, who had major success with record sales and hit singles such as “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not”. Lauryn Hill went solo in 1998 with the release of her debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, on which she worked with artists such as Carlos Santana, D’Angelo, and John Legend. The album featured the very successful songs “To Zion” and “Everything is Everything”, and Lauryn Hill became the first female artist to win five Grammy Awards in one night in 1999. She was also honored at the 1999 NAACP Image Awards, and went on to produce and write songs with Carlos Santana as well as Mary J. Blige. As a follow-up to her debut album, she released a live recording of some new material which she revealed on MTV Unplugged. The album was titled MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, and was made available in 2002.

Lauryn Hill went on to create songs sporadically, and later reunited with the Fugees in 2004 for Dave Chappelle’s document titled Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, filmed in Brooklyn. Lauryn Hill went on to take a long hiatus, and as of 2014, has not released any new albums. She became politically active during her hiatus, yet in 2012, was charged with tax evasion and was sentenced to prison for a few months. Just before her imprisonment, she released the single “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)”, which would be the first song of hers to be released in ten years. In addition to her music career, Lauryn Hill has also made television and film appearances, including on the soap opera As the World Turns and in the film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.
