Dee Rees Bio
Dee Rees is an American screenwriter and director born in Nashville, Tennessee on February 7, 1977. She is known for writing the films Pariah, Mudbound, and Bessie. While attending college at New York University for film her professor and mentor was Spike Lee. She went on to work under Spike Lee for his films When the Levees Broke and Inside Man. While working for Lee she worked on her film Pariah. She adapted the first acts of the script into a short film that was played at 40 film festivals and won several awards. In 2009 she released her first full-length film, a documentary titled Eventual Salvation. Rees has since released the films Pariah, Bessie, Mudbound, and The Last Thing He Wanted. She has also written and directed episodes of the television shows When We Rise, Empire, and Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. Throughout her career she has been nominated for numerous awards and has won a Directors Guild of America Award, two Independent Spirit Awards, a Woman’s Film Critics Circle Award, a Gotham Award and more.
