Colter Wall was born on June 27, 1995 in Saskatchewan. He attended Swift Current Comprehensive High School and graduated in 2013. He then studied at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Wall became familiar with country music while growing up. He started learning guitar at the age of 13, playing the music of rock bands such as AC/DC and Black Sabbath. He later became interested in Blues artists and began listening to folk music. He made demos of his songs while still a student, and in 2015 he took a break from his studies at the university to focus on his music, which led to the release of his EP.
Wall recorded a seven song EP in 2015 with Jason Plumb, the producer at Studio One in Regina. The EP, Imaginary Appalachia, earned enthusiastic reviews in both Canada and the United States. This success got Wall noticed, and in 2016 he opened for Lucinda Williams at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. He was signed to Rick Rubin’s song publishing company. According to his producer most of his songs are autobiographical.
