Hailee Steinfeld was born on December 11, 1996 in Tarzana, Los Angeles a to an interior designer mother and personal trainer father. She began acting at eight years old with appearances in short films and commercials. Her big break came when she was chosen from 15,000 actresses to play Mattie Ross in True Grit, directed by the Coen brothers. This role earned her an Oscar nomination in 2011 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. She later appeared in Pitch Perfect 2. Her cover of Jessie J’s “Flashlight” in the film sparked a singing career—her singles include the platinum-certified Love Myself and the 2016 hit Starving, a collaboration with Grey and Zedd, which reached number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Steinfeld reprises her role as Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 3.
