The Strokes Bio

The Strokes is an American band, very influential on the sound of 2000 alternative rock. It was formed in 1998 in New York, and originally consisted of singer Julian Casablancas, drummer drummer Fabrizio Moretti, and guitarist Nick Valensi, later joined by bassist Nikolai Fraiture and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. After gaining traction on the New York club scene, in 2001 they released their “Modern Age” EP and signed with RCA. The band rapidly grew a British fanbase, and later in 2001 issued “Is This It”, their full-length debut, topping the album charts in Australia, Japan and Canada. After extensive touring, including high-profile British festivals, the band issued “Room on Fire”, another international top 5 album, followed three years later by “First Impressions of Earth” and a supporting tour. In 2011 the Strokes followed up with “Angles” and “Comedown Machine”, produced by Gus Oberg. The Strokes have been prized with three NME Carling Awards, and one Brit Award in 2001.
