Charles Esten was born on September 9, 1965 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the College of William and Mary with an economics degree. Almost immediately after college, he moved to Los Angeles to attend comedic improv classes at the Groundlings Theatre. Though more famously known as a comedian, Esten made his debut in show business in theatre and had his theatrical debut as the lead role of Buddy Holly in the musical Buddy in the United Kingdom where he performed for Queen Elizabeth.
After a two year stint in the UK’s version of In 1999, an American version of Whose Line is it Anyway?, he returned to the U.S. Whose Line is it Anyway? was revamped with the addition of star host Drew Carey, and Charles Esten became a regular fourth contestant on the show. Esten has made several other guest appearances on notable TV shows such as Married… with Children (1997), The New Adventures of Old Christine (2007), ER (2007-2008), The Mentalist (2009), and The Office (2006).
Esten has held a top role in the popular drama series Nashville since 2012, and he is also currently heavily involved in making music, playing guitar, and singing, even appearing at popular venues such as the Grand Ole Opry.
