Jonathan Toews Bio

Jonathan Toews is a Canadian professional ice hockey player born in Winnipeg, Canada on April 29, 1988. He is currently the captain and centre of the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. As an amateur Toews was selected first overall in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft by the Tri-City Americans but chose to play midget AAA hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s. He played for two seasons at the University of North Dakota. In 2006 he was selected third overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks. In 2007 he signed a three-year rookie contract with the Blackhawks. Toews was named team captain of the Blackhawks in 2008 at 20 years old. He signed a five-season contract with the Blackhawks in 2009. In 2010 Toews was selected to be the cover player for the EA Sports’ video game NHL 11. He signed an eight-year extension contract in 2014 with an average salary of $10.5 million. Toews also plays for the Canadian national hockey team and has competed in the 2010 and 2014 winter Olympics, the 2007 and 2008 World Championships, the Canada / World Cup in 2016, the World Junior Championships in 2007 and 2006 and the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in 2005.
