Bong Joon Ho Bio

Joon-ho Bong is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, and actor born in Daegu, South Korea on September 14, 1969. His films include dark comedy and uncomfortable subjects. While in middle school he decided he wanted to be a filmmaker. He completed a two year program at the Korean Academy of Film Arts and made several 16mm short films. Bong has been the writer and director of several short films, including Baeksaekin, Incoherence, The Memories in My Frame, Sink & Rise, Influenza, Shaking Tokyo, and Iki. He was the writer for the feature films Motel Cactus, Phantom: The Submarine, and Antarctic Journal and the writer and director of the films Barking Dogs Never Bite, Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother, and Snowpiercer. He was the producer and writer for the film Haemoo and the director, writer, and producer for the films Okja and Parasite. In 1994 he made his acting debut in the film Incoherence as the delivery boy and made cameos in the films No Blood No Tears, Crush and Blush, and Doomsday Book. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a number of awards and has won five Korean Film Awards, three Grand Bell Awards, three Director’s Cut Awards among others.
