Melogy Gardot was born on February 2, 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gardot started getting involved with music when she was nine years old by learning to play the piano. She loved Radiohead, Judy Garland, and The Mamas and the Papas, who ended up being her top inspirations. When she was a teenager, she would go to bars in the evenings and play for tips.
Gardot suffered a tragedy in 2003 when she was riding her bike and got hit by an SUV that had run a red light. She was in a hospital bed for a year and still has memory loss and pain. While she was in the hospital, however, she learned how to play the guitar while lying on her back. She released Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions in 2005 on iTunes, and got noticed by Universal Music Group, who would go on to release a few albums and singles. Her most recent album, Currency of Man, was released in 2015.
