Steve Martin Bio

Stephen Glenn Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas. As a teenager, he sold books at Disneyland. At the age of 15, he was promoted to Merlin Magic shop where he worked for three years. While working at Disney, he was captured in the background of a home movie that was made into the short-subject film Disneyland Dream, coincidentally becoming his first film appearance. During his free time, he visited the Main Stream Magic Shop where tricks were demonstrated to potential customers.

He mastered some few tricks and illusions and by 1960, he took a paying job at the magic shop in Fantasyland where he perfected his talent for magic, juggling and creating balloon animals. He attended Santa Anna College where he took classes in drama and English poetry. In 1977, he wrote and starred in a short film, The Absent-Minded Waiter, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He picked up an Emmy for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and latter showed his sketch and stand-up skills on multiple ‘70s series. He published his autobiography, Born Standing Up, in 2007. He released a bluegrass album, The Crow: New Songs for the Five-string Banjo (2009), which earned him a Grammy Award.
