Calgary, Alberta, is where Michael Bernard Fitzgerald was raised. While singing the lyrics to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire," his song "Man Overboard" was created. His musical inspiration frequently comes to him in an instant. In roughly the same amount of time as it takes to sing them, "In Your Room" and "Love Is An Easy Thing To Miss" were written. Both songs were quickly written using voice note recordings on his phone without any written words. The guitar part for "Love is an Easy Thing to Miss" was inspired by Drake's "Marvin's Room" song. He uses a Gibson J45, known as the workhorse of acoustics, and he has one in natural and sunburst finishes. He also enjoys playing B3s, Leslies, tube amplifiers, saxophones, and drum sets.
