American Football is an American emo band formed in 1997 in Urbana, Illinois. They consist of Mike Kinsella (vocals, guitar, bass), Steve Holmes (guitar), and Steve Lamos (drums, trumpet), and after 2014 they were also joined by Nate Kinsella (bass). The trio made a brief but meaningful stint in the US emo scene in the late 1990s by releasing an EP (1998), and an LP (1999), both self-titled, but gained little notoriety and disbanded soon after. However, they got the attention from the emo public in the early 2000s, and by 2004 the label Polyvinyl decided to re-issue their LP in vinyl format, prompting a re-discovery of the project by wider audiences. In 2014 the band reunited and worked with producer Jason Cupp to produce a second full-length album titled “American Football (LP2)” that went out in 2016. Yet another full-length album was issued in 2019, this time with collaborations by Hayley Williams from Paramore and Elizabeth Powell from Land of Talk.
