The Mountain Goats is the musical outlet of writer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist John Darnielle and his choice of session musicians. Born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1967, Darnelle is a renowned lyricist, being characterized as “best lyricist” by The New Yorker and Paste magazines. Mountain Goats started in 1991 with self-recorded lo-fi cassette releases such as Nine Black Poppies (1995) and Full Force Galesburg (1997), among others, attracting a small following. In 2002 Darnielle started crafting more carefully recorded issues starting with full length “Tallahassee”. In 2011, he released “All Eternals Deck” with the aid of producers like John Congleton and Erik Rutan from Morbid Angel and Hate Eternal. In 2012, a compilation of his earlier ‘90s tapes was issued under the name “The Hound Chronicles”. His songs have been used in television series such as Weeds and the animated show Moral Orel.
