America Bio

America is a soft-rock band formed in London, England in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. They became renowned worldwide in the 1970s for their hits “A Horse with No Name,” “I Need You,” and “Ventura Highway”. After signing with Warner Bros. the group issued a self-titled debut album in 1970 and toured the U.K. with The Everly Brothers. In 1973 they were awarded the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and released another full-length album called “Homecoming”. The group also enjoyed chart-topping singles in the following years, included in the albums Holiday was the first record the group made with producer George Martin, followed by “Holiday” (1974) and “Hearts” (1975). After 1976’s gold album “Hideaway”, the band lost Dan Peek and their work saw a small decline in their commercial success. However, by the late 1990s, they returned with live performances and retrospective collections like the “Highway” box set in 2000. Between 2005 and 2019 they made studio collaborations with Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne, James Iha from The Smashing Pumpkins, and Ryan Adams.
