Hiatus Kaiyote is a Grammy nominated future soul quartet from Melbourne, Australia. The quartet is comprised of Naomi ‘Nai Palm’ Saalfield on the vocals, Paul Bender on bass, Perrin Moss on the drums/percussion and Simon Mavin on the keyboard. Hiatus Kaiyote met in their home city, Melbourne in 2012. The group independently released their debut album, ‘Tawk Tomahawk’ in 2012 which gained the attention of Q-Tip, Erykah Badu and Salaam Remi. Remi contacted the group and signed Hiatus Kaiyote to his label, Flying Buddha. Remi introduced the group to Q-Tip, where he remixed their single, ‘Nakamarra’, for the worldwide release of their debut album. In the next year, the group was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance for ‘Nakamarra’. Gilles Peterson also praises the band, naming them Breakthrough Artist of 2013. The group released their second album in 2015 titled ‘Choose Your Weapon’ which debuted on the Australian albums chart at number 22 and number 11 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. The album contained their song, ‘Breathing Underwater’, which was also Grammy nominated for Best R&B Performance in the same year. In 2017, lead singer Nai Palm released her solo debut album, Needle Paw, garnering the attention of Drake, who featured her on his album, ‘Scorpion’. It is rumored that the group will be releasing new music together again. ‘Choose Your Weapon’ is Hiatus Kaiyote’s most successful album to date, with their songs, ‘Molasses’ with 15.9 million plays on Spotify followed by ‘Fingerprints’ with 10 million plays.
