Betsey Johnson is an American fashion designer born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on August 10, 1942. She is known for her over the top feminine designs and for ending her fashion shows in a cartwheel that ends in a split. After graduating college she interned at the women’s fashion magazine Mademoiselle. Her career in fashion started after entering the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest and winning. She became the in-house designer for the Manhattan boutique Paraphernalia. She opened her own fashion boutique in 1969 called Betsey Bunky Nini in New York City. In 1970 she acquired the fashion label Alley at and within her first year sold over $5 million in product. She received the City Fashion Critics’ Award in 1971. Johnson was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame in 2002. In 2014 she competed in ABC’s dance competition show Dancing with the Stars but was eliminated in the 4th week coming in 10th place.
