Barry Jenkins was born on November 19, 1979 in Miami, Florida. Barry studied at Florida State University where he graduated with a BFA in film. He was an active director and screenwriter as early as 2003, but his first big break was Medicine for Melancholy (2008). A few minor writing projects later, Barry rattled the film industry with his work on Moonlight (2016). Moonlight won a string of awards such as Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Award for the Best Narrative Feature at the Chicago International Film Festival. He was personally nominated for New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director, Academy Award for Best Director, and Golden Globe Award for Best Director for his work on Moonlight.
