GZA Bio

Garry Grice (popularly known as GZA or The Genius) is an American rapper born on August 22, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. He shuttled between relatives as he learned rhymes and how to rap.

Garry first landed a recording contract with Cold Chillin’ but the contract didn’t last long. In 1991 he joined the Wu-Tang Clan and later released his solo album Words from the Genius, prior to the clan’s formation. The album was mostly produced by Easy Mo Bee. He left the label a short while later.

Garry’s first post-Wu track I Gotcha Back appeared in 1994 and was used as the soundtrack for the film Fresh. His sophomore album Liquid Swords appeared in 1995, reaching the Top Ten in Billboard 200 and #2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The singles Cold World and Shadowboxin’ did well on the rap chart. In 1999 he released Beneath the surface which was followed by his fourth album Legend of the Liquid Sword in 2002.
