Matthew Avery Modine (born March 22, 1959 in Loma Linda, California, USA) is an award-winning American actor and director. He is the recipient of a Golden Globe Award, Venice Film Festival Volpi Cup and Golden Lion.
In 2005, Modine appeared in Mary, directed by Abel Ferrara, and co-starring Juliette Binoche and Forest Whitaker. The movie won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. He was a part of the Emmy winning Showtime series Weeds, where he played the oversexed Sullivan Groff. He has also appeared as Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, the title character in Alan Parker's Birdy, high school wrestler Louden Swain in Vision Quest, and in Weeds.
As a director, Modine has directed several distinguished short films including, When I Was a Boy (1993), Smoking (1994), Ecce Pirate (1997), I Think I Thought (2008) and To Kill an American (2008).
