Country rapper, songwriter, and producer Big Smo was born John Lee Smith on Feburary 14, 1976, in Shelbyville, Tennessee. First and foremost, he is known for his effortless blending of country music with rap and hip-hop styles. While in high school, Big Smo played in the marching band after having learned as a child to play the trumpet and the drums. When he met DJ Ray Riddle, the two of them ventured out to perform some of Big Smo’s poetry with Riddle’s DJ beats. Big Smo thus became known as being at the forefront of a combination genre “hick-hop”, referring to his deep country roots and hip-hop beats.
Under Yayoda Records, Big Smo released his debut album entitled Kuntry Kitchen in 2003, followed by The Audio Biography and Monument Society in 2004. 2007 saw the release of The True South. Big Smo self-released an album entitled American Made in 2010, from which he debuted his song “Kickin’ it in Tennessee” on YouTube, which garnered close to 5 million views. Under Warner Bros. Records, Big Smo released Grass Roots in 2012 and Backwoods Whiskey in 2013, two EPs that preceded the release of his big-label album Kuntry Livin’ in 2014.
