Billy Crystal Bio

William Edward Crystal was born on March 14, 1948 in New York, NY. He attended the New York University School of Fine Arts in the late 1960’s and had Martin Scorsese as a professor at one point. Crystal got his start as a part of a comedy trio but later broke off to go solo. His first noticeable TV appearance was on an episode of All in the Family in 1976.

Crystal experienced a setback in when he was supposed to appear on NBC Saturday Night (now called SNL), but his piece got cut instead. His luck returned in 1977 when he became a regular on the series Soap. He created his own NBC show, The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour, but it was soon canceled. He was invited to be a regular on SNL for a couple years, to which he gladly accepted.

Crystal has appeared in several hit films directed by the infamous Rob Reiner, including This is Spinal Tap in 1984, The Princess Bride in 1987, and When Harry Met Sally with Meg Ryan in 1989, the latter of which got him a nomination for a Golden Globe award. He later received another Golden Globe nomination for his part in 1991’s City Slickers. He had voiceover roles in Monsters, Inc. (2001) and Cars (2006). He also appeared with the late Robin Williams in Comic Relief in 2006. He most recently appeared with Josh Gad on The Comedians; however, the show got cut after its only season in 2015. He is identified with wins and nominations for big awards such as Primetime Emmy Awards, American Comedy Awards, USA, CableACE Awards , Online Film & Television Association awards, and Television Critics Association Awards. Crystal has also been recognized on the Billboard Hot 100 for his standup comedy releases.
