Hip-hop artist Ab-Soul was born Herbert Anthony Stevens IV on February 23, 1987, in Los Angeles, California. For the first four years of his life, Ab-Soul lived in Germany due to the fact that his father was in the military, but when his parents separated, his mother took him back to the U.S. He was influenced early on by the music of Michael Jackson, but his contraction of a life-threatening disease caused him to focus more on his health than on music when he was young.
In 2005, Ab-Soul signed with StreetBeat Entertainment, but after working with them for two years, moved on to Top Dawg Entertainment in 2007. 2008 saw the release of his very first music video, for the song “A Day in the Life”, which was off of the mixtape he was working on at that time. He followed the success of the release with the mixtape Longterm in early 2009. This is part of a four-serious mixtape, and shortly after the first, Ab-Soul created the group Black Hippy along with Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar. Ab-Soul went on to release four singles to promote his second album Longterm Mentality, all the while featuring guest verses from Black Hippies Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q. Longterm Mentality was released in 2011, and charted at #93 on the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-hop Albums. He followed it with Control System in 2012, and later These Days … in 2014, which sold tens of thousands of copies in the United States its first week, charting at #11 on the Billboard 100.
