Aesop Rock is the stage name of the American hip-hop recording artist and producer Ian Matthias Bavitz. He was born in Syosset, New York on June 5, 1976. He has been a member of the groups Hail Mary Mallon, The Uncluded, The Weathermen, Two of Every Animal, and Malibu Ken. While in college he self-financed two albums, Music for Earthworms in 1997 and Appleseed EP in 1999 that were produced by Blockhead and Dub-L. He became popular in the underground hip hop and indie rap community after the release of his first two albums. Aesop went on to release 5 more full length albums and 3 more EPs, including Float, Labor Days, Bazooka Tooth, None Shall Pass, Skelethon, The Impossible Kid, Daylight, Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives, and Cat Food. He also released 17 singles and made appearances in a number of shows and documentaries like Sad Clown Bad Dub IV, Letter to the President, The Warriors, Hip Hop Street Credentials, My Shot With…, Engine Room, Blacking Up: Hip-Hop’s Remix of Race and Identity and Independent Lens.
