Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist and activist born in Beijing, China on August 28, 1957. As an activist he is highly critical of the Chinese Government’s stance on democracy and human rights and uses his art to demonstrate that criticism. He investigates government corruption and cover-ups and has been arrested for his activism. Weiwei went to college at the Beijing Film Academy and studied animation. Ai continued his studies in the United States and went to the schools The University of California, Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. He has released a number of documentaries about human rights violations, cover-ups, and government corruption like Fairytale, Little Girl’s Cheeks, 4851, So Sorry, Stay Home, Human Flow, The Crab House and more. He has also made a number of Visual arts pieces like Map of China, Table with two legs on the wall, Surveillance Camera, Grapes, Free-speech Puzzle among others. He also has released music, releasing his debut single in 2013 titled “Dumbass” and released his first album the same year titled The Divine Comedy. Throughout his career he has received many awards like a Chinese Contemporary Art Award, an Appraisers Association Award, an Ambassador of Conscience Award and more.
