Alcest is self-described as a “blackgaze” band, which merges the genres of black metal and shoegaze – in other words, progressive metal jamming. Formed in France, the line-up is a duo of Neige (lead vocal, guitar, keyboard) and Winterhalter (drums and other duties), with some side talent brought in for touring. This was originally Neige’s solo project, but he’s developed it over the years into the sounding board for his personal muse.
That muse becomes apparent when you find out Neige means Alcest to transmit the sound of the “otherworld,” as he calls it, where faerie folk live, and that’s points for artistic commitment. Alcest has released five studio albums as of this writing, the latest, “Kodama” (2016) being their most ambitious yet, and also their highest charting. Catch a rising star and let it take you to faerieland, a refreshing take on metal music.
