Angélique Kidjo was born on July 14, 1960, in Cotonou, Benin. She debuted as a singer in 1981, and she released her debut album, Pretty which included the song “Ninive.”
Her breakthrough happened in 1991 when she released the album Logoz that topped the charts. She received her first Grammy nomination in 1994 for her single “Agolo” which was part of the album Aye. She released Oremi in 1998, and the album featured Kelly Price and Kenny Kirkland. Her other albums include Black Ivory Soul and Oyaya!
She won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album for Djin Djin in 2007. She bagged another award in 2014 for her album Eve which won the Best World Music Album Award. In 2015, her album Sings won another Grammy’s for the same category.
