Antonique Smith is an actor, singer, and songwriter born on August 11, 1983, in East Orange, New Jersey. In the theater, she is most well known for her role as Mimi Marquez in the production of RENT. In television, she has appeared in a multitude of roles, including a recurring role on Marvel’s Luke Cage and appearing as Aretha Franklin’s mother, Barbara, in the anthology series, Genius: Aretha. Smith has also starred in several films, including Abduction opposite Taylor Lautner and Alfred Molina and Yelling To The Sky with Zoe Kravitz, Gabourey Sidibe, and Jason Clarke. Smith is an accomplished singer and songwriter. She released her own EP in 2015 titled Love Is Everything. Her single, Hold Up Wait a Minute (Woo Woo), earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Alongside writing her own songs, Smith has also written songs for television. Smith is the co-writer of the theme song for Shots Fired, a show she also starred in.
