Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group, best known for their 1997 breakthrough single Barbie Girl.
Initially forming as Joyspeed in 1989, the band was renamed Aqua in 1994 and achieved huge success across the globe in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group managed to top the UK Singles Chart with their first three singles, and released two albums: Aquarium (1997) and Aquarius (2000), before splitting up in July 2001. The group sold an estimated 33 million albums and singles, making them the most successful Danish band ever and the second most successful Norwegian band.
The band's debut album, Aquarium, sold more than ten million copies worldwide upon its release in 1997. The 2000 follow-up, Aquarius, included the Top Ten British hit "Cartoon Heroes". Following the band’s split, a few reunions occurred in subsequent years, including a 2008 tour and a 2009 hits compilation. Then, in 2011, Aqua released their third album, Megalomania, to commercial success on the Danish charts. Another reunion tour was planned for 2017, prompted by the 20th anniversary of "Barbie Girl."
