“Bahamas” is the stage name of Afie Jurvanen, a Finnish-Canadian folk musician from rural Ontario. The self-taught guitarist collaborated with such artists as The Lumineers, Feist, Howie Beck, Jason Collett, Jack Johnson, The Weather Station, and Zeus. In a Globe and Mail interview, Afie explains that he picked the name Bahamas because it conjures imagery and makes the listener hear the music through a different filter, one far different from his Canadian home.
In 2008, Bahamas released his debut album “Pink Strat” on the Downtown Music Publishing label, garnering a Juno Award and Polaris Award nomination that would not be his last. His three subsequent albums to date, “Barchords” (2012), “Bahamas Is Afie” (2014), and “Earthtones” (2018), have all been likewise honored.
