Berlin is an American new wave band, formed in 1978, in Orange County by John Crawford (bass guitar). Other members included Terri Nunn (vocals), Ric Olsen (guitar), David Diamond (keyboards), Matt Reid (keyboards), and Rod Learned (drums). The band gained mainstream success in the early 80s with singles including Sex (I’m A…), The Metro, No More Words, and the chart-topping single Take My Breath Away from the movie Top Gun, in 1986.
They have no connection to the capital of Germany but decided to use the name Berlin to sound European and exotic. They were inspired by the keyboard work of Devo, Kraftwerk, The Screamers, and Sparks. Their EP titled Pleasure Victim featured the controversial single Sex (I’m A…) which was banned by some radio stations due to its graphic lyrics. Top Gun’s Take My Breath Away became a huge international hit, but unfortunately their last big hit. In 2011, the band toured with the rock band INXS, and in 2013 they released a new album titled Animal. In 2019, the band reconstituted with Nunn, Crawford, and Diamond, and released their eighth album titled Transcendence.
