Bethany Hamilton is an American professional surfer born in Lihue, Hawaii on February 8, 1990. She became well known after surviving a shark attack in 2003 at the age of 13. She lost her left arm to a 15 foot tiger shark and went on to have a successful career in professional surfing. Hamilton wrote about her experience in her autobiography titled Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board that was published in 2004. In 2011 a feature film was made based on her book titled Soul Surfer. Bethany started surfing from a young age and at 8 years old won her first surfing competition. She went on to win a number of professional surf competitions, including the Rell Sunn Menehune in 1998, two NSSA National Competitions in 2004 and 2005, the T & C Pipeline Women’s Pro in 2007, the Surf ’n’ Sea Pipeline Women’s Pro in 2014 and others. She has appeared in several television shows and films like Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grade?, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, 19 Kids and Counting, Dolphin Tale 2, and The Amazing Race. In 2014 she released the book Body and Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun and Fabulous Life, where she shares her experience as a professional athlete to a healthy lifestyle.
