Bill Callahan Bio

Bill Callahan is an American singer and songwriter born in Maryland in 1966. Before starting a solo career in the late 2000s, he gained notoriety as a pioneer of the indie lo-fi style under the alias Smog. Smog was active from 1988 to 2005 and gained critical praise for its songwriting. In 2007 Callahan made a debut with a full-length album titled “Woke on a Whaleheart”. 2009 saw the release of “I Wish We Were An Eagle,” an album produced by John Congleton and Brian Beattie. A live performance in Melbourne, Australia, was captured in 2010’s Rough Travel for a Rare Thing. His next album “Apocalypse” went out in 2011 and prompted a tour registered in a documentary by photographer/filmmaker Hanly Banks. After two more albums titled Dream River (2013) and Have Fun With God (2014) and the publication of a book compiling his lyrics and drawings titled “I Drive a Valence”, Callahan took a break from public life. In 2018 he returned with a concert album called “Live at Third Man”, and in 2019 he released the album “Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest” featuring guitarist Matt Kinsey. In 2020 the artist released “Gold Record” with bassist Jamie Zurverza.
