Widely known for her eclectic style and her unique voice, singer/songwriter Björk Guðmundsdóttir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, on November 21, 1965. Although she sang and recorded heavily as a pre-teen, she made her debut with the release of her 1993 album Debut, which was a cross-section of electronic music, jazz, and trip-hop. She is seen as being at the forefront of electronic music, helping to sweep it to the level of popularity that it gained in the latter half of the 2000s. The album sold more than 3 million copies internationally, and was inclusive of two Top 20 singles: Human Behaviour and Big Time Sensuality. Her 1995 sophomore album, however, sold more than the first, and was entitled Post.
Alongside director Lars von Trier, Björk recorded and released a promotional song in 2000 for the movie Dancer in the Dark, in which acted in her first big screen role. The song “I’ve Seen It All” won an Academy Award for best song. She caused a stir at the Academy Award performance when she wore the infamous swan dress while singing the song. Björk released her third album the next year, entitled Vespertine. She would later release the albums Medúlla in 2004, Volta in 2007, and Biophilia in 2011. Björk’s first six albums have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
