Black Thought was born as Tariq Luqmaan Trotter on October 3, 1971, on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He became part of the group The Roots with Malik B, Leonard Hubbard, and Questlove. The group put out their debut album Organix in 1993. Their second album, Do You Want More!!!??! became a hit and landed on No. 5 of the Billboard R&B Charts.
The group scored a Grammy Win for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group in 1999 for “You Got Me” featuring Erykah Badu. In 2010, they collaborated with John Legend and snatched two more wins for Best R&B Album for Wake Up! and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for “Hang On In There.” They received Best Rap Album nominations for five of their albums.
Black Thought was featured on David Banner’s single “A Banner Vision” with Watch The Duck Who Want It. He was also in Statik Selektah’s Bird’s Eye View with Raekwon and Joey Bada$$. In 2018, Black thought released the solo EP Streams of Thought Vol. 1.
