Bonnie McKee Bio

Singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee was born on January 20, 1984 in Vacaville, California. As a child, she studied classical piano and was a member of the Seattle Girls Choir, which toured around North America and Europe.

She was performing around the Seattle area by age fifteen and her demo got in the hands of Colin Filkow who signed her to his company, Platinum Partners Artist Management. At eighteen, she signed with Warner Brothers Records. Her debut album, “Trouble,” was released in September 2004 and did not see commercial success. She was subsequently dropped from her record label after becoming addicted to crystal meth. In 2009, she met producer Dr. Luke and they collaborated on Katy Perry’s singles, “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F).” All three songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She went on to co-write Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” Rita Ora’s “How We Do (Party),” and additional songs performed by Katy Perry including “Wide Awake” and “Part of Me.” She wrote the song, “I Don’t Care,” for Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. That song reached number one in the UK and made Fernandez-Versini one of Britain’s top pop stars. In 2012, she signed a recording contract with Epic Records and released her first single, “American Girl,” under them in July 2013. However, her album was never released, and she left Epic Records. She was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2014 Grammy Awards for her writing credits on Katy Perry’s single “Roar,” and she was won eight BMI Pop Music Awards. In December 2014, she independently released a single, “California Winter,” and a subsequent EP, “Bombastic,” which was released in June 2015.
