Calypso Rose, whose real birth name is Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis, is a Caribbean calypso musician, singer, and songwriter who was born on April 27, 1940, in Bethel Village, Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago. She is popularly known as the mother of the calypso musical genre, and she began her career in 1964. Her lyrics are often about social issues, including racism and sexism which complements her also a social activist with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador title.
During her extensive career, she has composed over 1000 songs and has released over 20 full-length studio albums, besides having accomplished several world tours. She has also received several awards and distinctions, including The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Tobago Walk of Fame, and Most Outstanding Woman in Trinidad and Tobago. Among her most famous songs we can find “Calypso Blues”, “Calypso Queen” and “Abatina”.
