CeCe Peniston is a singer and former beauty queen born in Dayton, Ohio on September 6, 1969. As a child she started singing in her church choir and participated in singing talent shows. While in college she started writing pop lyrics and wrote her hit song “Finally” while in chemistry class. In 1989 she was crowned Miss Black Arizona and in 1990 Miss Galaxy. Peniston started her professional music career in 1991 singing backup vocals for the rapper Tonya Davis. That same year she released her debut single “Finally” that became an instant hit and was at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/ Club Play for two weeks. In 1992 she released her debut studio album titled the same as her debut single Finally that sold over 550 thousand copies. She followed it up with two more albums, Thought ‘Ya Knew and I’m Movin’ On. Peniston has acted in several theater productions, including The Wiz, When a Woman’s Fed Up, and Treat Her Like a Lady and has had roles in several films like Pastor Jones, Don’t Touch if You Ain’t Prayed, Thorns from a Rose, and Where is Good?. Throughout her career she has been nominated for a number of awards and has won three ASCAP Awards, a BMI Award, three WMC Awards, two BPI Awards and others.
