Charles Osgood Bio

Charles Osgood is a retired American radio and television commentator and writer born in New York City, New York on January 8, 1933. He is best known for hosting the CBS News Sunday Morning for over 22 years from 1994 to 2016. While in college he volunteered at the university’s FM campus radio station, WFUV. After graduating college he was hired as an announcer by EGMS and WGMS-FM in Washington D.C. He enlisted in the military to be the announcer for the United States Army Band and was the band’s master for three years. After his tour with the U.S. Army band finished he returned to WGMS full time as an announcer. In 1958 he was promoted to program director. In 1963 he was hired as a writer and host for the ABC Radio Network show Flair Reports. In 1971 he joined CBS News and was a reporter and anchor on the shows CBS Sunday Night News from 1981 to 1987, CBS Morning News from 1987 to 1992, and CBS News Sunday Morning from 1994 to 2016. He also hosted the daily radio commentary show The Osgood File from 1971 to 2017. In 1990 he was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2004 he was awarded the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and in 2005 was awarded the Paul White Award.
