Chely Wright (born Richell Renee Wright) was born on October 25, 1970 in Kansas City, Missouri. She started her music career signed to record label, Mercury; however, after two unsuccessful album releases through them, she signed for MCA Nashville, with whom she remained for the next 6 years (1997-2003). During her time with MCA Nashville, Wright released 3 albums, one of which, Single White Female, received a gold album certification.
In 2003, when Wright began to see her popularity drop, she signed with independent label Vivaton, with whom she went on to produce 4 more albums. She is currently touring the U.S. with her eighth album I Am the Rain.
Since 2011, Wright has worked on several documentaries centred on LGBT rights, and recorded a documentary film about her own experience as an LGBT woman, entitled ‘Wish Me Away’. Wright has received a number of nominations for awards throughout her music career, and has been lucky enough to win many music awards. Wright has recently seen more accolades and awards for her work on documentaries and for her LGBT activist work.
