Cymande Bio

Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) was formed in 1971 in London, England. The members of the band were Joey Dee, Patrick Patterson, Sam Kelly, Steve Scipio, and Ray King even though they eventually had nine members. Cymande is one of the first bands that merged African rhythms with rock, funk, and reggae. Their music inspired dancing or a spirited conversation between the listeners.

Their fame increased when The Message, a song in their 1972 album peaked number twenty-two in the R&B charts in 1974. The Message featured on national radio as well as being included on the phenomenally successful soul compilation, Superbad.

They released two more albums: 1973's Second Time Round, and 1974's Promised Heights -- before splitting up. After an almost four-decade break (during which time their songs were checked out by rappers and DJs) the band came together again and dropped A Simple Act of Faith in 2014. John Schroeder, who headed their earlier songs, produced the set.
