Dan Bern’s family is native Lithuanian but they immigrated to the United States in the late 50s. Dan was born on the 27th July 1965 in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and was raised in the same state. His father being a concert pianist and his mother a German singer, Dan had a talent for music and he started early.
He learned and mastered the cello as a youngster. He was later inspired by Bob Dylan to learn guitar and write his own songs. By the time he made his recording debut in 1996, he already had a cult following. His six-track EP made him even more famous and landed him a contract with Sony Records’ Work Group in the same year. By 1997, Work made available Dog Boy Van, his excellent 1996 indie release that was recorded prior to his signing with them. Ani Difranco produced his next hit track Fifty Eggs which was released in March 1998 while Smartie Mine came out later the same year. Dan later moved from the Midwest to New Mexico in 2002.
