Daron Malakian Bio
Singer/songwriter and instrumentalist Daron Malakian was born on July 18, 1975, in Hollywood, California. He was heavily influenced by his creative parents, such as his father Vartan, who is known to have done the artwork for the band System of a Down’s CDs Mezmerize and Hypnotize. When he was four years old, Daron Malakian’s cousin introduced him to the band Kiss, and from then on, he was hooked on metal music. Years later, while working as a singer for a band he had joined, Daron Malakian met Serj Tankian while they were in the same studio for separate rehearsals. The two got to talking and finally decided to form their own endeavor, with Shavo Odadijan joining as the bassist. Their trip was known as Soil, but they later adopted the name System of a Down, which was taken from a poem that Malakian wrote about the Armenian genocide. With the addition of drummer John Dolmayan, the band was solidified.
System of a Down began touring throughout Los Angeles, frequently selling out the crowds wherever they went. They debuted their self-titled album in 1998, which went Gold and then Platinum. After much success internationally and a handful of Platinum albums, Daron Malakian started his own label in the early 2000s known as EatUrMusic. In 2005, the band released the album Mezmerize, and all of the songs except for one were written by Malakian. From 2007 – 2008, Malakian and Dolmayan played in an experimental band known as Scars on Broadway. Daron Malakian had made a few appearances with his new band over the next couple years, but widely left the public eye after the major success of System of a Down.
