Dawn Richard, born Dawn Angelique Richard (born August 5, 1983), is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, actress and model. She is best known as a member of 90’s group, Danity Kane and vocal duo Diddy – Dirty Money. Dawn is from Creole-Hatian descent and was born in New Orleans Louisiana, where she would perform with New Orleans local group Realiti. She was later discovered by record label Yeah! Brother who released her solo album in 2005, ‘Been A While’ while she was attending the University of Orleans and was a cheerleader for the New Orleans Hornets. Richard’s career breakthrough was in 2005, auditioning for the show Making The Band which led to her place in a girl group, Danity Kane put together by Diddy Combs. The group was a success with their presence on the R&B and pop scene, especially with their top single, ‘Damaged’ which presently has 20 million plays on Spotify. It was not until 2009, when the group was dismembered that Richard found herself working with Bad Boy Records as a songwriter for R&B artist Cassie and Combs. In the same year, she began to sing with Diddy Dirty Money, along with Combs and Kalenna Harper. While with Diddy – Dirty Money, she released her first solo album, ‘The Prelude to A Tell Tale Heart’, a twist on R&B and electronic music. Then after, she released a trilogy of albums in 2013; Goldenheart, Blackheart and RedemptionHeart. Goldenheart debuted at number 2 on the Heatseekers Albums chart and number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart. Richard is now known as DAWN and released her latest album in 2019, new breed, showcasing her progressive R&B sound that gained praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Vogue amongst many others calling new breed one of the year’s best albums.
