Death Cab For Cutie Bio

Death Cab for Cutie is an American alternative-rock band from Washington. Originally from Bellingham, the band formed in 1997 by founder, vocalist and musician Ben Gibbard. Along with Gibbard is Nick Harmer on the bass, Dave Depper on guitar, keyboard and backing vocals, Zac Rae on keyboards and Jason McGerr on drums. The band released their debut album titled ‘Something About Airplanes’ in 1998 followed by ‘We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes’ in 2000 which gave Death Cab for Cutie popularity in the independent music scene. A third album arrived in 2001 titled ‘The Photo Album’ which preceded their 2003 album, ‘Transatalanticism’. ‘Transatalanticism’ brought Death Cab for Cutie to mainstream success as their songs were featured in popular TV series’ like Six Feet Under, The O.C., CSI: Miami and Californication. As their indie-rock sound became more recognizable, Death Cab for Cutie released a live EP titled ‘The John Byrd EP’ in 2004. In the same year, Death Cab for Cutie signed a long term deal with Atlantic Records. ‘Plans’ was released in 2005 and was the band’s debut major-label release with Atlantic. ‘Plans’ was the band’s breakthrough success, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album in 2005 and received a platinum certification by the next year. Three years later, Death Cab followed their success with their album ‘Narrow Stairs’ in 2008. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 which was also Grammy nominated for Best Alternative Album. Their hit single from the album ‘I Will Posses Your Heart’ also received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song in the same year. Their 2011 album ‘Codes and Keys’ topped the charts on the Billboard US Alternative Songs at number 1. ‘Kintsugi’ arrived in 2015 and their latest body of work, ‘Thank You For Today’ in 2018. Death Cab for Cutie remains to be a indie-rock favourite with their single, ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ receiving 171 million plays on Spotify and is still sung today by many artists.
