Musician and producer Devin Garrett Townsend was born in Vancouver, Canada, on May 5, 1972. After being recruited by guitar virtuoso Steve Vai in the early 90s, he started to pursue a career on his own, as a multi-instrumentalist and even composing a rock opera. The Devin Townsend Project in 2008 was explicitly formed to produce a tetralogy of experimental metal and rock records with a changing roster of session musicians. Their debut album “Ki” went out in 2009, and featured drummer Duris Maxwell from The Jefferson Airplane. A second LP, “Addicted”, was also released in 2009 and had Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering as a guest vocalist. In 2011, the band launched two more studio records on the same date, named “Ghost” and “Deconstruction”, the latter with an appearance of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Later that same year, a live box set was released. Townsend continued the project after his original four planned albums, and produced eight more albums between 2012 and 2018.
