Originating in Capetown, South Africa, the hip-hop duo Die Antwoord is comprised of vocalists Yo-Landi Vi$$er (whose real name is Anri du Toit) and Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones). Though the two formed their duo in 2008, Ninja had already been active in the South African rap and hip-hop scene long before the days of Die Antwoord. They represent an energetic genre known as zef, which was made popular in a counter-culture movement. Die Antwoord, which in Afrikaans means “The Answer”, common features trilingual rap: in Afrikaans, English, and Xhosa, which are languages spoken throughout South Africa.
In 2009, the duo released their debut album $O$, which was available free of charge on their website. Because of this, the website got millions of hits, as did their video for the single “Enter the Ninja”. The next year, Die Antwoord signed with Interscope Records, and performed internationally for the first time at Coachella. Shortly after, they left Interscope and created their own label, Zef Records. Early in 2012, they released their second album Ten$ion, followed by Donker Mag in 2013. Production and live accompaniment of their music is normally provided by DJ Hi-Tek,
