Djimon Hounsou is a Beninese American actor and model born in Cotonou, Benin on April 24, 1964. He is best known for his roles in the films Amistad, Gladiator, In America, and Blood Diamond. His career in the entertainment industry started with him appearing in music videos for artists like Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Madonna, and others. In 1990 he made his debut in television on the show Beverly Hills, 90210 and has also been in the shows ER, The Wild Thornberrys, Soul Food, Alias, Black Panther and Wayward Pines. Hounsou also made his debut in film in 1990 in the movie Without You I’m Nothing. He has continued landing roles in films like Stargate, Gladiator, In America, Beauty Shop, Never Back Down, Special Forces, The Legend of Tarzan, Aquaman, Serenity, and more. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a number of awards including Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He has won two Black Reel Awards, two NAACP Awards, an Independent Spirit Award, and a National Board of Review Award.
