Drax Project is a New Zealand pop band that consists of Sam Thamson, Matt Beachen, Shaan Singh and Ben O’Leary known for their triple platinum hit ‘Woke Up Late’. The band started with Matt on the drums and Shaan on the saxophone and as vocals where then later joined by Sam on bass and Ben as the lead guitarist. All the band members are from Wellington, New Zealand where they played as buskers at Courtenay Place in Wellington as well as local bars and events. Aside from Ben O’Leary who attended Whitireia University in New Zealand, all other band members studied at the New Zealand School of Music. Hailee Steinfield had great interest in their hit song ‘Woke Up Late’ and was soon after featured on the track. The single now has 60 million global streams and had its debut on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart and was voted Amazon Song of The Day. The group then released their self-titled album, ‘Drax Project’ in 2019 which debuted in the number 2 slot on the NZ Official Top 40 Album chart and Official Top 20 NZ Albums. The Drax Project is currently signed to Universal Music Publishing Australia for both Australia and New Zealand and has 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Their catchy and delightful pop sounds have named them VNZMA’s (New Zealand Music Awards), Breakthrough Artist in 2019.
